General Role Description

This role is part of the engineering team and reports to the Director of Upstream Engineering.

This role is an integral part of the early team at Ayana Bio. We are looking for candidates who are driven to help shape Ayana Bio’s technology and are excited to join our mission of democratizing standardized and safe ingredients for consumer nutrition, health, and wellness.

Your primary role will be to support the engineering team by enabling the process development and scale-up of programs to external partners. You will be involved in the early-stage hands-on process development of new programs to optimize a scalable and robust production process from seed train through purification of final product. You will design and execute statistically powered experiments to optimize and define process parameters for increased productivity and large-scale suitability. In addition to design, execution, and analysis of your own experiments you will also assist in the external transfer of methods and protocols to CDMOs and serve as person-in-plant to ensure the success of our production runs at pilot scale. To thrive in this role, you should be a self-motivated problem solver with an eye for detail and consistency who relishes the opportunity to create something new and important. This full-time position is in Boston, MA.

Responsibilities

  • Support technology transfer to external CDMOs at both pilot and commercial scale
  • Design, execute and analyze small scale process development experiments and projects
  • Author and review tech transfer documents and batch records
  • Act as person-in-plant for critical process operations
  • Lead cross-functional meetings to regularly update management on the status of ongoing productions and investigations, ensuring transparent communication
  • Assist in the application of GMP concepts and regulations to in-house process development
  • Closely work with the rest of the internal engineering team to support process development
  • Support other areas within Ayana Bio, including process chemistry, intellectual property, strategy, regulatory, safety, product development, pilot scale manufacturing, and partnership development

Qualifications

The successful applicant will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree with 5+ years, or a master’s degree/PhD with 0+ years of experience in bioprocess/chemical development and manufacturing
  • Expert in sterile technique and suspension cell culture maintenance in flasks
  • Well-versed in a variety of PATs (process analytical technologies) and analytical tools for characterizing cell culture
  • Experience with statistical experimental design using JMP or similar
  • Experience optimizing processes in bench/pilot scale bioreactors through experimental design and control loop tuning
  • Downstream experience is a plus, specifically drying, distillation, and chromatography
  • Experience with plant cell culture is highly desirable
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and an ability to work across organizational boundaries (e.g., keep physical or electronic lab notebooks up to date,
  • create data reports, and draft standard operating procedures)
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, with the ability to balance production, development, and continuous improvement needs
  • Excel in interpersonal relations, with the ability to lead through influence and effectively manage external partners
  • Must be able to travel up to 25%

We also feel that it’s important to state the obvious here: Our industry lacks diversity, and that needs to change. Our goal is to help drive that change. Ayana Bio is deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all its practices, especially when it comes to growing our team. Our culture promotes inclusion and relishes the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life.

In addition, we are developing a powerful biological engineering platform and must remain mindful of the many ways our technology can – and will – impact people around the world. We care about how our platform is used. Having a diverse team to build our platform gives us the best chance to create something we’ll be proud of as it continues to grow. It is critical that we incorporate diverse voices and visions to create a more equitable future of biology.
