Position

The “Senior Scientist – Plant Transformation” will help to develop Green Bioactives’ future world-class plant transformation capabilities and build our plant transformation team. The successful candidate will be an expert in plant tissue culture and plant transformation technologies, with strong working knowledge of plant transformation procedures. They will drive both the discovery and process improvements across our plant transformation pipelines, as well as the focused delivery of natural product development milestones across our biomanufacturing platform.Preference will be given to individuals with tissue culture and transformation experience across diverse plant species, including ornamentals. Industry experience is essential. Familiarity with plant expression vector biology and transgenic plant analysis is required. Experience with plant cell cryopreservation, protoplast culture and plant regeneration/micropropagation techniques would be a plus.The successful candidate is expected to work primarily in the lab to instil best transformation and tissue culture practices and to direct the daily activities and goals of an initially small team of molecular biologists. They will interface closely with a team of plant cell culture specialists in a highly cross-functional and collaborative atmosphere. Duties extend to oversight of plant sourcing, plant growth and propagation as well as transgenic plant generation and maintenance. Reporting to the Research Lead, they are expected to be an experienced individual who can work with a high degree of autonomy and contribute knowledgeably to the company’s goals and the development of our intellectual property portfolio.

Key responsibilities

•Develop and implement well-established and novel approaches to nuclear transformation in diverse ornamental plant species, including attention to intellectual property considerations and opportunities.

• Develop near-term and long-range team goals aligned with company broader objectives and deliverables and provide daily leadership and oversight of the plant transformation function.

• Manage the successful delivery of transformation-focused project goals for third party collaborations, including outward-facing project planning and reporting.

• Lead the design and development of plant transformation-related experimental plans.

• Execute on experiments to develop and optimise our plant transformation activities.

• Establish good laboratory practices, follow health and safety procedures and protocols, data tracking/analysis/presentation and stewardship oversight of all plant transformation-related discovery and production projects.

• Regularly and clearly communicate research progress and results to team members and company leadership.

Qualifications and skills

• Education and Training: Relevant MSc or PhD degree with a minimum of 5 years’ applicable industrial experience in plant tissue culture and transformation.

• Transformation Experience: Proven record of success and hands-on experience in plant transformation discovery and systems development and improvement.

• Leadership and Agility: Independent and able to perform under tight timelines and with the agility to change course as needed in a fast-moving startup atmosphere.

• Organisation: Excellent planner, critical thinker, project and people performance manager with a demonstrated ability to efficiently execute project tasks.

• Broad Scientific Knowledge: Strong understanding of molecular biology, plant gene expression and plant transformation vector technologies. Knowledge and experience with plant cell cryopreservation, protoplast culture and plant regeneration/micropropagation techniques.

• Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to express complex ideas concisely.

• Problem Solver: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of finding creative and/or alternative solutions to challenges.

• Job Type: Permanent, full-time

• Hours of Work: 40 hours per week worked Monday to Friday including a paid lunch break of up to 1 hour per day. Flexibility around the core working hours of 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

• Salary: £45,000 - £55,000 per annum depending on experience.

• Benefits: 33 days holiday (pro-rated, inclusive of 8 public holidays), pension scheme, EMI share options.
