We are looking for an outstanding Staff Process Engineer to join our Synthetic DNA manufacturing team. As a member of the automation engineering team, your primary responsibility will be to develop hardware and processes necessary for the automation of Twist’s Synthetic DNA products. You will be responsible for inventing, developing and managing the robotic handling of liquids, cells and DNA.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Inventing, developing, and managing processes involving liquid handling systems for nanoliter amounts of synthetic DNA
  • Developing tooling, hardware, and software for DNA synthesis and processing
  • Operation of a range of scientific instruments and tools with a focus on laboratory automation systems and cross-integration systems
  • Work with team members, tech transfer team, software and R&D to flesh out requirements for new processes and accordingly, design HW and scalable process workflows
  • Take ownership of design, development and implementation of projects
  • Lead process validation, prepare documentation, and train instrument operators
  • Technology transfer from lab to production
  • Follow regulatory and ISO 13485 requirements

What You’ll Bring to the Team

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field and 8+ years of relevant experience, or PhD or M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field with 1-2 years of relevant experience.
  • In-depth understanding of nanofluidics/ microfluidics
  • Hands-on skill and demonstrated experience in operating and programming automated laboratory tools, automation, liquid handlers, systems integration
  • Understanding of Biochemical processes involved with DNA synthesis and amplification
  • Experience in designing and writing scripts using control software or dynamic scheduling software native to laboratory automation systems and cross-integration systems
  • Excellent scientific computation and data analysis capabilities
  • Excellent communication and writing skills, very organized and ability to work in a fast paced team environment
  • Experience with biology instrumentation used for PCR, cell-based cloning, DNA extraction and purification
  • Ability to work with biologists and chemists to transfer assays and processes from the lab bench to automated hardware for production.
  • Ability to work with software engineers to guide the development of custom software needed for automated hardware
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment, excellent team player

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Experience with optics and lasers
  • Matlab, Python and/or C++ programming skills
  • Electronic design and debugging skills
  • Solidworks 3D CAD or similar parametric design software
  • Machining skills

The base cash compensation for this California-based role is below. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for bonus, equity, and a generous benefits package. Final compensation amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate skill, experience, expertise, and location and may vary from the amount listed above. Compensation may be different in other locations.

San Francisco Bay Area Pay Range

$155,000—$170,000 USD
