(Senior) Computational Protein Engineer
Here's the tl;dr:
At Cradle, we are on a mission to help make programming biology easy. We do that by providing biologists with the software, machine learning & services to discover, design and optimise enzymes and their cell-factories
We're an experienced team, have built many successful products before and we've raised EUR 5.5m from top tier investors
We're focused on building the best possible team culture. We're distributed across two locations, do almost everything async and are super flexible about when we work.
We offer top of the market salary, a generous equity stake in the company and a wide range of benefits from health and wellbeing, financial, to training and career progression opportunities.
This is Cradle
Cradle aims to make programming biology easy by providing biologists the tools to discover, design and optimise enzymes and cell-factories. We are bridge builders who bring together the best of machine learning, synthetic biology, developer tools, and user experience design. Our mission is to enable a world where most of the products around us can be easily made and degraded biologically using a cell-factory instead of (petro-)chemicals, plants or animal agriculture.
What we're looking for
For this, we are looking for an experienced protein engineer with hands-on experience in discovering and optimising novel proteins. If you enjoy understanding how proteins work by looking at their structure and sequences, suggesting mutations to improve stability, activity, and selectivity and if you’re excited about teaching computers some of your mad skills, put them on steroids, and open up uncharted territory - reach out to us!
As a computational protein engineer, you will collaborate with our machine learning engineers and bioengineers to develop, incorporate, and evaluate novel computational methods for our enzyme optimisation pipeline. If you enjoy working on computational methods for protein optimisation, love to tinker, and want to be a part of building the next-generation platform for making biotechnological products - please apply!
Responsibilities
As a computational protein engineer, you would be expected to:
Research and build computational methods, tools, and libraries that can integrate with our machine learning algorithms to engineer protein variants with improved characteristics;
Together with our machine learning engineers, develop computational workflows that leverage machine learning and your protein engineering know-how;
Innovate on existing methods and workflows to improve prediction and lower costs;
Evaluate the output of the protein engineering algorithms;
Propose libraries of targets for engineering proteins with improved properties
Need-to-Haves
PhD or equivalent experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, computational biology or related discipline, with experience in protein engineering.
Demonstrated track record of using modern software to engineer enzymes for improved stability, activity, and/or selectivity
Experienced in using common software tools for bioinformatics, protein modelling and analysis. These could include one or more of the following: Schrödinger, Rosetta, Chimera, and PyMOL.
Effectively communicating results, successes and challenges in a cross-functional environment.
Scientific rigor in developing experiments and a flair for close collaboration and communicating within cross-functional teams
Nice-to-haves
Familiarity with molecular dynamics simulations, protein structure modelling and analysis
Experience with machine-learning-based algorithms for structure modelling, such as Alpha Fold.
Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python, Matlab, R, SQL, and up-to-date with libraries for protein modelling, optimisation, and visualisation.
