About Us

At Matterworks we are building AI tools to extract insights from the ever-growing corpora of biological data and to unlock opportunities in therapeutic discovery, development, and manufacturing. We are building large-scale deep learning models of biological data to predict the phenotype and behavior of biological systems.

Matterworks is seeking a highly motivated bench scientist to help us develop and optimize novel methods using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to enable quantitative metabolomics. The ideal candidate is a standout, independent thinker with a strong technical background in mass spectrometry and adjacent technologies, and a track record of developing and validating new analytical methods.

You will be expected to design, execute, and analyze data from complex experimental workflows, and collaborate closely with data science and product development teams. A deep working knowledge of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry is essential. Familiarity with current metabolomics solutions, use cases, and data analysis tools is highly desirable.

You will learn the latest in LC-MS based metabolomics from experts in the field, as well as the application of machine learning to mass spectrometry. You will have the opportunity to help build a novel product from the ground up, while learning about the product development and marketing process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, test, and optimize liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomics workflows
  • Design and execute experiments for the large-scale generation of metabolomics data
  • Work closely with the AI and Data Science team to analyze data and iterate on experimental designs and protocols
  • Contribute to the design and testing of the Matterworks platform, including software tools and reagents
  • Document and transfer knowledge of R&D methods and specifications to internal and external parties
  • Record and review project data with a high degree of accuracy
  • Plan, execute, and track tasks to deliver project results on time
  • Ensure that workspaces are maintained and adhere to company and building-wide safety and waste disposal guidelines
  • Ability to travel domestically up to 20% of the time to ensure successful execution of projects at external laboratory sites

About You

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, biology or related field or MS with a minimum of 3 additional years of experience focusing on the development and application of advanced bioanalytical techniques incorporating mass spectrometry or BS with 5 years of relevant industry experience
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with LC-MS using high resolution instrumentation
  • Experience with quantitative data analysis from LC-MS data
  • Expertise in designing custom liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based assays with well-characterized performance and robustness
  • A first-principles thinker who is not afraid to question traditional methods
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills; experience communicating with a wide range of scientists with varying degrees of knowledge about LC-MS and metabolomics
  • Detail oriented, with strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to lift and/or move 20 lbs. repeatedly
  • Perform actions such as bending, squatting, stretching, reaching, or using a step ladder to carry out service on instruments, objects, tools or controls

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with Thermo Fisher Scientific Orbitrap mass spectrometers and vendor software, namely FreeStyle, TraceFinder, and Compound Discoverer
  • Knowledge of biochemistry, cell metabolism, metabolomics and/or lipidomics
  • Knowledge of R and/or Python for data science
  • Experience with nanospray-based quantitative proteomic workflows
  • Familiarity with liquid handlers and other lab automation tools
  • Familiarity developing and implementing novel and semi-automated data analysis methods, ideally in metabolomics workflows
  • Experience with product development processes
