The Gathering Lamp is a new creation from Normal Phenomena of Life, a biodesign brand that creates and curates objects made with living organisms. This unique table lamp was designed and developed by Faber Futures in collaboration with Mitre & Mondays, using Biolith® bio concrete tiles made by Biomason

Inspired by the core principles of architectural Brutalism—structural clarity, functional integrity, and material-driven aesthetics—the Gathering Lamp introduces a biogenic logic, drawing on nature’s regenerative processes. The Biolith® tiles, made from bio-concrete using microorganisms at ambient temperature, contrast sharply with the energy-intensive production methods typical in conventional concrete manufacturing.

The bio-concrete tiles are encased in a custom anodized aluminum housing, ensuring the entire lamp is recyclable and aligned with circular economy principles. Its modular design promotes longevity and ease of repair, underscoring the potential of biomanufactured materials to minimize environmental impact.

The use of Biomason’s biofabricated Biolith® tiles—formed not in carbon-emitting factories but through bacteria-driven reactions that turn sand into stone—highlights the lamp’s sustainable approach. Designed for easy disassembly, it features custom modular components that can be repaired, replaced, or recycled..

Ioana Man, Faber Future’s Design Lead, explains: “The lamp’s product development strategy is built on nature's logic, facilitating the circularity of biomaterials and integrating them into a system that supports continuous reuse and recovery. By repurposing materials that would typically be discarded, The Gathering Lamp provides a sustainable lighting solution and encourages a shift in consumer behavior towards products that support environmental sustainability.”

Assembled by hand with minimal intervention, the Gathering Lamp follows the natural flow of resources, allowing for continuous reuse and recovery. Each tile is unique, meaning the color and finish of each lamp may vary slightly. Available online at normalphenomena.life, this limited-edition lamp is priced at £450, with only 10 units produced

With its minimalist design and ambient lighting, the Gathering Lamp transforms spaces with its understated yet impactful presence. It exemplifies how biology, design, and technology can unite to create products that inspire a consumer shift toward greater environmental responsibility.
