CuspAI Launches ‘AI Materials Foundry’ to Propel Material Discovery
CuspAI unveils the AI Materials Foundry, a collaborative platform designed to revolutionize material discovery across industries.
CuspAI has officially launched the AI Materials Foundry, a groundbreaking global network that combines data, labs, computational resources, and scientific expertise to facilitate the design of new materials through a unified platform.
Dr. Chad Edwards, CuspAI’s CEO and Co-Founder, emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating, “If we don’t make progress fast, the next 50 years of industrial progress will be constrained by a single challenge: the world needs materials that don’t yet exist. That’s what we’re on a mission to solve.”
The Foundry boasts over 45 founding members, including tech giants like NVIDIA, which will supply the computing infrastructure, and Meta’s Fundamental AI Research Team, developers of the Universal Model for Atoms (UMA), a cutting-edge model in atomistic chemistry for materials science.
At the core of this network is CuspAI’s proprietary AI platform, MIRA, which allows partners to conduct comprehensive discovery cycles, covering everything from generative materials design to simulation, synthesis route planning, and coordinated experimental validation. This platform is supported by the largest curated experimental materials datasets globally.
The collaboration aims to address the materials bottleneck hindering progress across various sectors, particularly semiconductors, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. Dr. Edwards elaborated, “We’re delighted to be joined by more than 45 leaders in their fields to advance materials discovery.”
Ian Buck, Vice President of Hyperscale and HPC at NVIDIA, noted, “As AI transforms the physical world, new materials will open up new frontiers across semiconductors, energy and advanced manufacturing.” He added that the Foundry merges NVIDIA's accelerated computing infrastructure with top-tier chemistry and materials expertise to drive the next generation of materials discovery.
Rob Fergus, Vice President of AI Research at Meta, expressed pride in the partnership, stating, “We're proud to be longstanding partners with CuspAI and now as founding members of the AI Materials Foundry ecosystem.”
The AI Materials Foundry addresses four critical components essential for software-led materials discovery: high-quality training data, powerful computational resources for screening, synthesis infrastructure for physical realization, and domain expertise to interpret results.
This innovative ecosystem enables a feedback loop where breakthroughs achieved within the network can expedite discovery timelines across the entire global value chain. CuspAI has already demonstrated its capability to accelerate discovery processes, as seen in a collaboration with Kemira, where they screened 300 trillion potential molecular structures and delivered twenty validated candidates in just six months.
Among the ongoing projects is a multi-year partnership with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore, focusing on AI-driven discovery and autonomous synthesis in semiconductors, carbon capture, and advanced electronics.
The Foundry members will gain insights into cutting-edge AI methodologies for materials discovery and how to implement CuspAI's discovery platform, MIRA, within their existing R&D frameworks. MIRA allows partners to specify their needs—such as a compound with certain properties—and generates candidate structures while managing synthesis routes and lab capabilities.
Data protection is paramount, with partner data secured within private Foundry instances, ensuring confidentiality for multinational and government operations. The simulation layer utilizes kUPS, an open-source molecular simulation toolkit developed with NVIDIA, paired with Meta’s UMA to facilitate rapid and accurate atomic interaction simulations.
CuspAI’s leadership team includes experts like Professor Max Welling, who co-invented the variational autoencoder, and Professor Aron Walsh, a leading computational materials scientist. The company has secured exclusive AI training rights to foundational datasets in materials science, enhancing its data advantage with each completed program.
The Foundry's founding partners span various sectors, including 3M, AMD, Applied Materials, Henkel, Hyundai Motor Group, and more, joined by numerous academic institutions and data partners like CCDC and Wiley.
As Heung-Soo Kim from Hyundai Motor Group noted, “As a founding member of the AI Materials Foundry, we are excited to help accelerate breakthroughs in materials innovation.” Sumie Segawa from Tokyo Electron remarked, “We believe that the AI Materials Foundry concept could disrupt the current business model in the industry.”
CuspAI is poised to redefine the landscape of materials discovery, leveraging AI to drive innovation across critical sectors. With a robust network and a commitment to collaboration, the AI Materials Foundry aims to unlock new possibilities for future technologies.
