Frontier Bio Secures Phase 1 Win in $7M NIH Challenge for AI-Enhanced Blood-Brain Barrier Testing
Frontier Bio's innovative NeuroTraX-AI platform has earned recognition in a national competition aimed at advancing human-based testing methodologies.

Frontier Bio, a biotechnology firm focused on engineering advanced human tissues, has been awarded as a Phase 1 winner of the Complement-ARIE New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) Reduction to Practice Challenge. This national competition is organized by the NIH Common Fund in collaboration with the FDA and EPA, and is administered through the NASA Tournament Lab. Winning Phase 1 comes with a cash prize and propels Frontier Bio, among up to 20 winning teams, into the next stages of the multi-year contest, which features a total prize pool of $7 million.
The challenge aims to promote NAMs, which are human-based laboratory and computational methods designed to decrease reliance on animal testing while enhancing the precision of early-stage drug development.
The recognition aligns with U.S. regulators' shift towards the human-based testing methodologies that Frontier Bio specializes in. The FDA's 2025 roadmap, supported by the FDA Modernization Act 2.0, details a strategy to eliminate animal-testing requirements in favor of human-based and computational alternatives. Currently, the expense of bringing a single drug to market is estimated at $2.6 billion, taking over a decade, with less than one in ten central nervous system drug candidates that enter clinical trials successfully reaching patients. This is largely due to the blood-brain barrier, which obstructs around 98% of small-molecule drugs and nearly all biologics.
Frontier Bio's award-winning NeuroTraX-AI platform combines a scalable, human-cell-based microphysiological system that simulates the neurovascular unit with an AI component that assesses blood-brain barrier disruption from standard, label-free microscope images. This platform evaluates how drugs, cell therapies, and injuries impact the human barrier, determining whether an agent crosses, disrupts, or maintains the integrity of the barrier. The result is precise, spatially resolved data that enables faster and more cost-effective testing.

Moving forward, Frontier Bio plans to broaden NeuroTraX-AI's training library, increase throughput, and seek pilot partnerships with drug and cell therapy developers, transitioning from a working prototype to a commercial platform.
