News Digest #197 - These Fifty Synthetic Biology Companies Raised $1.7B in 2017

Hi all,Given the record breaking amount of money being invested in synthetic biology companies, it seemed that 2016 was going to be hard for the industry to top. However, we just crunched the numbers for 2017 and thanks to several late mega-raises from both public and private companies, more than $1.7 billion was raised. Flagship Pioneering closed a new $618M life science fund, GenScript announced that it has acquired CustomArray to expand its synthetic biology portfolio. GenScript also saw a sharp increase in its stock price after it announced a CAR-T Cell immunotherapy collaboration with Janssen. Thermo Fisher and Juno Therapeutics also announced a new CAR T Partnership. French company DEINOVE launched the production of its first carotenoid molecule.

More exciting news from the field of cultured meat: SuperMeat, an Israeli biotech and food-tech startup, has raised $3M in seed funding to bring clean chicken products to market within three years.
