Transfyr Launches Physical AI Platform for Science with $25M Seed Funding

Transfyr aims to revolutionize scientific execution and translation through its newly launched physical AI platform, backed by significant seed funding.

Transfyr, a new physical AI platform designed to enhance real-world science, has officially launched, securing $25 million in seed funding. This funding round was led by General Catalyst and included contributions from Lux Capital, Breakout Ventures, Factory, Neo, SV Angel, MVP Ventures, Underscore VC, Lyda Hill, and several angel investors.

The company was co-founded by Anna Marie Wagner, who previously served as the Head of AI and Corporate Development for Ginkgo Bioworks, and Dr. Renee Wegrzyn, the founding Director of ARPA-H. Their mission is to streamline the transition from scientific possibilities to tangible impacts. They recognize that challenges in scientific reproducibility and robotics stem from a limited understanding of the contextual dependencies and physical realities inherent in scientific work. Transfyr seeks to bridge the gap between the physical and digital realms within scientific laboratories by capturing hands-on bench science and transforming it into machine-readable data.

"Science is missing a critical layer of infrastructure that’s necessary for efficient reproducibility, translation, scaling, and automation,” stated Anna Marie Wagner, co-founder and CEO of Transfyr. “The existing scientific record is a lossy representation of reality and we must build the interfaces that make the nuances of science observable and interpretable for future generations of scientists and the autonomous systems that will support them.”

To address this issue, Transfyr has gathered a talented team consisting of wet-lab scientists, automation engineers, perception researchers, machine learning engineers, and computational biologists. This team has extensive experience in building laboratories worldwide, deploying large automation systems, and developing advanced DNA foundation models. Advisors and angel investors include notable figures such as Chris Ré from Stanford, Nobel laureate David Baker, Jakob Uszkoreit of Inceptive Medicines, Ken Frazier, Stephen Quake from Stanford, and Kevin Weil, formerly of OpenAI.

The platform aims to tackle the inefficiencies resulting from gaps in the scientific record. AI can process vast amounts of scientific data but struggles to learn from the lessons of past failures and the nuanced knowledge that is often unwritten. "Breakthroughs mean nothing if they stay trapped in a single lab or depend on unwritten tacit knowledge to succeed," remarked Renee Wegrzyn, PhD, co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer of Transfyr. “The real bottleneck to revolutionary science isn't a lack of big ideas, it's the massive friction of translating those ideas into reliable, scalable reality with impact.”

Transfyr utilizes integrated sensor systems and multimodal models that are trained on real-world scientific execution to passively capture and interpret the information that is often missing from the scientific record. The platform is designed to learn each customer’s context, establishing a reliable record of operator actions, environmental context, equipment telemetry, and supply chain dynamics. This metadata can help identify sources of process variability, enable root cause analysis, optimize protocols, and create training and tech transfer standard operating procedures, all while using active reinforcement learning loops to adapt to new protocols and environments.

Located at The Engine in Cambridge, MA, Transfyr also operates an in-house wet lab to generate foundational training data for its models, test its sensor systems in real experimental workflows, and evaluate top frontier labs. The infrastructure developed by Transfyr is beneficial for both human scientists and advanced AI and robotics research. The team is collaborating with partners across various sectors, including diagnostics, academic research, workforce development, and robotics.
